ABRF Career Development Committee, Membership Committee, and CAN-CC:

    Hello Everyone,

Next week's ABRF Peer Mentoring Conversation will focus on Career Pathways in Core Facilities, which has been a popular topic in each of the prior Virtual Peer Mentoring sessions.

We will continue to use breakout rooms in the session to provide participants a way to engage with each other on specific issues.  I'd appreciate your help to identify Breakout Room topics.

    Possibilities include:

    1. Creating model structures (Job Families) for Core facilities – (Technical Director; Administrative Director; Manager; Staff Scientists; Technologists)

    2. Promotion potential (scientific/management):
      1. Research Technician I/II/III
      2. Research Coordinator/Manager/Administrator
      3. Director
      4. Scientist I/II/III (Jr/Sr?)

    1. Updating Human Resources systems to support career advancement – who needs to lead the process?  what's required to effect change?

    2. Skill-based vs. credential-based hiring/promotion practices

    3. Types of Professional Development support (continuing education; credentials; skills development; time for publishing)

    1. Standards for Promotion? – experience; performance metrics; 360 feedback; user satisfaction

Let me know if these, or other topics, would be helpful.  Perhaps we can suggest up to 4 topics for participants to choose from, with the option to switch during a second round of discussions.

As a reminder, the monthly Virtual Peer Mentoring Conversation is scheduled for Tuesday, November 15th from 2:00 – 3:30 pm ET.  Register here.....

Thank you for your input.  I hope you'll be able to join the session to share your experience with others.

    Ken

These are great topics, Ken. I think maybe #2 and #4 are somewhat redundant. If we are aiming for four breakout groups, those could be combined. I think job families will be a hot topic, as well as sources of support for professional development. Finding a funding/time pool for those activities seems to be something many of us struggle with.
