  • 1.  Agilent Fragment Analyzer - Does it really need an SC?

    Considering buying an Agilent FA 5200 to QC nucleic acids, need to be able to size large PacBio libraries.  Doe I really need an SC or is this instrument pretty stable and worry free?

    We have an Agilent Femto Pulse for PacBio operations and don't have a service contract on the system. We had a Fragment Analyzer previously but did not get much use out of it, so cannot vouch on its stability.

    Our group has two 5200 used for RNA and NGS library QC (we've been using since 2013).  They are used daily and, therefore, get a lot of use.  We have them under service contract which has been helpful in the event of LED light replacement, worn electrical cables on robotic arm and fan replacement.  As I mentioned, we use them daily so there is quite a bit of wear and tear on these instruments.  However, they are robust and, if used sparingly, it might be more cost effect to pay for repairs as they happen.

    An Agilent Femto Pulse may be more appropriate for PacBio library QC.
