  • 1.  Dashboard for metrics

    Posted 01-28-2025 11:09

    Good morning,

I am interested in creating a dashboard to show different metrics for a group of shared resource facilities that I manage.  I am looking for direction on how to start?  Is there software that currently exists for this type of thing?  We use iLab so ideally it could pull data from there as well.

    Thank you for any insight!

    Hi Shawn,

We use PowerBI to visualize metrics for my Core. It uses a combination of ilab data as well as financial data from our institution's financial system.

Happy to discuss further over a call if you like.

There will also be a great session/workshop on this topic at the annual meeting on Monday "Business Intelligence Tools and Core Data: Practical Workshop" – hope you can make it!

We have used PowerBI as well for reporting with the help of someone in our finance office who knows how to use the tool. If your institution doesn't offer it college-wide as part of your Microsoft license it is possible for your IT group to upgrade the license for a few individuals that need to use the software at a minimal cost.

    Hi,

We used Tableau, but are now using PowerBI. I think PowerBI is what we will stick with going forward. It's pretty helpful.

We are in the process of setting up a PowerBI dashboard as well. The iLab dowload is in CSV format, which lends itself well to dashboard building.

    Hi Shawn,

At UNC we use Tableau to pull our iLab and financial information into dashboards.

The key for us making dashboards work is having an automated method of getting the data into a usable database. For NU, we transfer data from our billing system (NUcore) to the NU Datamart nightly. We have excellent, ongoing, support from IT folks to make this happen. We can then pull using Cognos, Tableau, or in theory map to Excel using database queries. Manually downloading data is okay for snapshots but is challenging to maintain as a dashboard.
