August 7, 2024 Data Science Announcements | | | Have You Checked the Data Science Job Board? | | Breaking Data Science News | | August Data Sharing and Reuse Seminar We cordially invite you to attend the upcoming Data Sharing and Reuse Seminar featuring Dr. Robert Schuler and Dr. Jifan Feng. Dr. Schuler, a Senior Computer Scientist and Lead Scientist at the University of Southern California's Information Sciences Institute, will be joined by Dr. Feng, a Research Associate at the Center for Craniofacial Molecular Biology, Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC. They will be presenting on "FaceBase: Empowering Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research Through Data Sharing and Reuse." This event is generously supported by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research to highlight the importance of data sharing in advancing dental and craniofacial research. The seminar will introduce FaceBase, a trusted data resource for research and education on craniofacial and dental development and malformations/diseases across human and animal models. Dr. Schuler will present FaceBase as a community-building platform offering a cloud-based repository of high-quality FAIR data resources. Dr. Feng will then showcase examples of FaceBase data reuse in dental, oral, and craniofacial research. This presentation will demonstrate how FaceBase facilitates data sharing, analysis, and interpretation to accelerate discoveries in the field. We look forward to your participation in this informative session! Seminar Date: August 9, 2023 at 12:00 PM. | | Medical Image De-Identification Benchmark (MIDI-B) Challenge The MIDI-B Challenge invites developers to evaluate their DICOM image de-identification tools, emphasizing automated methods that maintain research utility. By utilizing diverse medical imaging data from the National Cancer Institute's Cancer Imaging Archive, participants can contribute to the MIDI-B Challenge report as co-authors. Top teams will be given the opportunity to present their algorithms and results at the MICCAI 2024 virtual session, fostering advancements in medical imaging and AI. The registration deadline for the challenge is August 15th, 2024. Stay informed and visit the official challenge website for more details or to sign up. Registration Ends: August 15, 2024. | | Introducing NIH Cloud Lab Are you interested in using the cloud for research but not ready to make a long-term commitment? Make sure you check out NIH Cloud Lab, a new 90-day program that enables NIH-affiliated* researchers to explore the cloud at no cost in a secure, NIH-approved environment. Participants can sign up at any time and receive an account with $500 of Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, or Microsoft Azure credits, access to curated bioinformatics tutorials, and support from NIH technical and bioinformatics experts. The program is open to all NIH-affiliated researchers and all NIH staff. Browse the Cloud Lab homepage to learn more and reach out to cloudlab@nih.gov if you have any questions. *NIH-affiliated includes those at research institutions that are eligible for NIH funding but who may not (or not yet) have an active award. | | The Center for Clinical Observational Investigations Launches New Dataset Profiles The National Library of Medicine (NLM) is pleased to announce that its Center for Clinical Observational Investigations (CCOI) now features dataset profiles for the National Institutes of Health's All of Us Research Program, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (available through the Virtual Research Data Center), the Clinical Practice Research Datalink Aurum, and the UK Biobank. Available on the CCOI website, the dataset profiles highlight, summarize, and aggregate information about and within select clinical datasets. Each dataset profile contains a dataset overview, basic statistics, and individual clinical concept counts. The dataset profiles are fully open and publicly available, as referenced in an August 2023 Musings from the Mezzanine blog post. The groundbreaking CCOI lowers barriers to finding, understanding, and using clinical datasets. It aims to reduce the research burden and improve access to key information from an important collection of clinical datasets, which are critical for scientific and public health research and policy but are otherwise not inherently linked. Researchers interested in using clinical observational datasets are encouraged to explore the resources and share their experience via the orange "Feedback" button on the right side of the CCOI website. | | June Data Sharing and Reuse Seminar Did you miss the previous Data Sharing and Reuse Seminar? No problem! Watch the recording for June's Data Sharing and Reuse Seminar and Michael Schatz's presentation on "BioDIGS: BioDiversity and Informatics for Genomics Scholars." This collaborative soil metagenome project focused on understanding soil biodiversity and its impact on human health. BioDIGS partners with the Genomic Data Science Community Network (GDSCN) to engage faculty and students in the genomic data science life cycle. This comprehensive study of soil biodiversity has already revealed significant associations between metagenome diversity and heavy metal content. Long-read sequencing enables the discovery of complete genomes and novel gene sequences, while highlighting the complex relations among different species in the soil. | | RECOVER (Long COVID) data available in BDC When it comes to Long COVID, many questions remain – and additional Long COVID data from NIH RECOVER is now available for investigators to analyze. Learn more about deidentified data now available on BioData Catalyst, a data science ecosystem for heart, lung, blood, and sleep research. | | New NOFO: Data Science Track Award for Research Transition (D/START) (R03-Clinical Trial Optional) National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) has released a new NOFO titled "Data Science Track Award for Research Transition (D/START)". This NOFO seeks to support investigators interested in applying cutting-edge data science techniques to address timely and challenging research questions related to substance use and/or substance use disorder (SUD) in all areas of research supported by NIDA. This NOFO requests Small Research Grant (R03) applications to support research projects that can be carried out in a short period of time with limited resources. Submission opens on September 16, 2024. Learn more at PAS-24-242. Submissions Open: September 16, 2024. | | CRDC 2024 Fall Symposium The Cancer Research Data Commons (CRDC) 2024 Fall Symposium will be held on October 16-17, celebrating its 10th anniversary.
