  • 1.  ISO Brightfield Slide Scanner Recommendations

    Does anyone have suggestions for a brightfield whole slide scanner. We do not need fluorescent capacity - we already have an imager for this. We need a capacity of 80 - 200 slides per day with fairly minimal contact time. Bonus but not necessary if it has the ability to include the slide label in the final image.

    Hi Karlie,
    I helped the Mount Sinai Biorepository Core purchase a Hamamatsu NanoZoomer. I don't remember the series or the model number to give you more details. Please let me know if you want to reach out to the core to get their feedback and I can direct you to someone in the core. From what I know, they are quite happy with it.

    Hi Katie,

    Right before I left my last position as a microscopy core manager, there was a big discussioni about replacing the slide scanner.  We looked at options from several companies.  We actually considered a slide scanner from Nikon that had the option to load 100 slides at one time.  I think they have great technology.  However, we didn't need that capacity and went with a different slide scanner option from Nikon.  That said, if you have a local Nikon rep, I would recommend that you ask them about their slide scanning options.  I am not familiar with the Hamamatsu option that others have suggested.  However, some of the things I liked about Nikon's options were speed, auto-focus capabilites, and data management.  Everyone complained about the speed, focus, and data management with our older Olympus system, and that was a big reason we desired to switch vendors.

    Hi Karlie, I second the recommendation of the Hamamatsu Nanozoomer. I operate two Nanozoomer S60 instruments which have a capacity of 60 slides, but I previously had an older model Nanozoomer that held up to 210 slides. That model is no longer available but I believe they have something in the 300 slide range. The Nanozoomers have been workhorse instruments for my core for the past 12 years - it's a fantastic instrument in terms of both image quality and ease of use/no contact operation.
