  • 1.  Philanthropy for Shared Core Facilities

    Hi, 

    Is there anyone that has had success with developing a Philanthropic program to support capital assets or research programs for Shared Core facility development?  I am aware of a few that have set this up and started to launch initiatives.  However, I'd like to see if there are other ideas for the development of this initiative at your Organization.

    Thanks for asking the question, Amanda. I would be interested in this topic as well.

     

    Our Imaging Center got a one-time philanthropic capital infusion  (from one donor) to put up a building. This also came with a sizable cash donation for operational support.

     

    This happened a while back and was part of a larger institutional capital campaign that raised lots of millions of dollars for other initiatives.

     

    We have not been very successful in raising additional capital for shared equipment or research programs since. We are at an academic medical center and most of the institutional donors are biased towards programs with "disease themes".

    We have struggled with this. The university has a "Day of Giving" which raises quite a bit of funding for other units, but we rarely get much, if anything. As Justine says, one major issue is getting donors excited without a strong disease-themed hook. We also simply don't have the expertise to frame an appropriate pitch, or the time to court donors.

    Everyone,

     

    If you think that this is a widespread need, would it make sense to consider developing a workshop or session on 'fundraising for Core facilities'?  We could access experts from the nonprofit/academic philanthropy/fundraising world to discuss how to apply principles of donor engagement to support the work of Cores.....

     

    Perhaps start with an online session or a program at a chapter meeting to gauge interest?

    We could consider hosting a Town Hall on this topic.....the calendar for these is wide open after June.  They are typically the 3rd Wednesday of the month from 12:00 – 1:00 pm ET, but we can adjust as needed.....
