  • 1.  Storing and Sharing imaging data

For my imaging friends. How do your institutions handle the short and long term maintenance costs associated with storing image data - which I understand can be quite large.  Do any of you support databases of such data for collaborative projects, how are those costs managed? Is this covered in overhead, direct funding.

    Hi Todd,

For clarification, what do you mean by short term and long term?

At CU Boulder, we have central storage solutions that have a standard rate per TB of storage. As such, when possible, we build this into our grant applications. For those with extremely large amounts of data, I believe there is an additional solution but I am not 100% certain. Sometimes CU will buy the physical storage and then the Users just pay the fees associated to Staff effort and overhead.

We have explored the Columbus Server approach, but have been turned off by the need for dedicated staff to ensure its function and to help Users. While Columbus is good, it requires significant investment in my opinion.

For my Core specifically, my data management plan is that the Users need to store and manage their data. With the volume regularly produced by my microscopes, I don't want to be involved with the data.

I'm happy to discuss this further.

    Best,

    Joe

short term, i use grant funds, long term, I don’t have funds but the data are still useful.

    does that help?

    Yep!

For super long-term storage, our university can put data onto tape/cheap storage as well, driving down the cost. I'll reach out to our IT to find out what the labs do to pay for data storage that is 5+ years old.
