  • 1.  Feedback request about selling mass spectrometry equipment

    Posted 07-29-2022 12:47
    Hello,

The LSU MSF will soon install two new mass spectrometers. Once that happens, we will not be able to afford service contracts for all of our mass spectrometers and we would actually have almost no use for 2 of them.
One is an ion trap (currently under service contract) and the other is a MALDI TOF/TOF which just reach EOL in July.
Both instrument are operational and hitting all specs.

I often receive emails from 3rd party sellers trying to buy equipment, but I rarely find myself in a position where I can consider such offers, so I do not really consider them.
I would like to know if anyone has experience with such deals and can share their thoughts.

    Thanks,
    Fabrizio

I've sold equipment on consignment - this was a liquid handler and the market was limited (explained to me up front by the vendor https://www.thelabworldgroup.com/)
Ultimately it sold, but 1) it as not taking up space in our labs and was packed and picked up by the vendor 2) we were prepared to write it off after a couple of years if it didn't sell.  It took a couple of years.

for Mass Specs, we were happy talking with https://gentechscientific.com/ to sell our used equipment,  but we ultimately found a home in another part of the university. There is often a desire to put older instruments in 'teaching labs' - it's not as trivial for those who take ownership as they often think, but it does move it out of your core. Just be careful not to keep strings attached for you to support them unless there is a favorable arrangement for you.

    James,

Thanks for the info. That is what I expect to happen, but I want to give everyone a good overview of the possibilities.
