On January 27, the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) directed federal departments and agencies, including those that fund biomedical and biological research, to pause distribution of all federal grants and awards that may be implicated by recent executive orders issued by the administration. OMB instructed each agency to submit by February 10, a comprehensive analysis of all Federal financial assistance programs to identify programs, projects, and activities that would be subject to suspension. The funding freeze was supposed to go into effect at 5:00 pm on January 28. A federal judge blocked the implementation of the OMB directive minutes before the deadline. However, the judge's order expires at 5:00 pm on February 3. It is possible that the current pause in federal funding will be implemented next week. The form on the right side of this page will allow you to contact your Senators and Representatives. Use data from FASEB's State Summary for NIH, NSF, USDA, and DOE SC and District Funding fact sheets to explain how this will affect your state and research and urge your elected officials to work with the administration to allow federal funding for NIH, NSF, etc. to continue as approved by Congress. A sample letter is provided. You may edit the sample message to add additional details about how the uncertainty surrounding federal funding for research grant is impacting you and your colleagues.
