From: FASEB Office of Public Affairs <opa@faseb.org> Sent: Thursday, September 4, 2025 8:02 AM To: Ken Schoppmann <ken.schoppmann@abrf.org> Subject: Urge the House of Representatives to Reject Cuts to NSF Funding
On May 2, the president sent his FY 2026 budget request to Congress, proposing an unprecedented $5.53 billion (almost 60 percent) cut in funding for the National Science Foundation (NSF). Thanks to the advocacy of researchers across the country, the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee recently approved a bill rejecting the president's proposed cut and recommending NSF receive $9 billion (a slight reduction of $60 million or 0.7 percent compared to the FY 2025 enacted level of $9.06 billion).
On July 23, the U.S House Appropriations Committee released a draft bill that would cut NSF funding by $2 billion (23 percent) compared to the FY 2025 enacted level. However, the House left for its summer recess without considering the bill. The Appropriations Committee is likely to vote on the bill when the House returns to Washington in early September.
We urgently need your help to tell the House to reject the president's and Appropriations Committee's plans to cut funding for NSF in FY 2026. There is still time to convince the House Appropriations Committee to provide at least current level funding for NSF, as the Senate did. Please contact your legislators TODAY by using the form on the right-hand side of this page. A sample email message is provided. You can modify the text to explain why you oppose cutting funding for NSF and how the research it supports benefits your state or institution. *New* data showing the amount your congressional district receives from NSF is available to include in the email to your representative. Please also share this alert with others in the research community after taking action.
