  • 1.  Instrument suggestions for automated DNA/RNA extraction and plate readers for screening

    Posted 08-21-2025 14:27

    Hi Everyone!
I'm hoping to pull from all the experinece in ABRF to narrow down some instrument choices/ hear about what you all use or your favorites.

The first is for automated sample extraction for DNA and RNA. I have a clinical group who will be collecting patient samples on the regular and wants to invest in automated sample extraction, but my facility doesn't really run extractions due to our size and lack of capacity, so I'm not super aware of the different options available. They're learning towards a Thermo Kingfisher right now. What are your favourites? Budget is about $50k

First is for a plate reader for largely luminescent, absorbance or fluorescent assays coming off of small molecule/ siRNA screens with our new Beckman Echo 650.
There are tons of plate readers and largely many would be able to do the job, but it's hard to get a handle on interfaces/ease of use for core use.
We had an old Perkin Elmer which had a ton of options, but had an incredibly un-intuitive interface to set up and use, so it was only used by the labs who had historically always used it. Any good models that anyone would suggest?

I appreciate any input y'all have!

    Mike

    Hi Mike,

I highly recommend the Promega RSC (Rapid Sample Concentrator) and GloMax plate reader.

    https://www.promega.com/products/lab-automation/automated-dna-rna-extraction-purification-maxwell/maxwell-rsc-48-instrument/?tabset0=0

    https://www.promega.com/products/microplate-readers-fluorometers-luminometers/microplate-readers/glomax-discover-system/?catNum=GM3000

The RSC comes in a 16 or 48 model, so is more medium throughput vs the KingFisher, but might be a good fit depending on  needs/budget/space footprint.

    Best of luck!

    Hi Jayme,
    Thanks so much!

I think the RSC 16 would be a great fit for the throughput and footprint for sure.

Have you ever run 1536 wells on the GloMax? With the Echo we've tried to miniaturize our assays to cut down on compound and genetic reporter assay reagents (siRNAs) but usually are limited be the threshold of detection on some older readers my users have in their labs.

Thanks again for the input and have a great weekend!

    Mike

    Happy to help, Mike!

However, my personal experience is limited to 96-well plates on the GloMax.
