  • 1.  New Federal Action Plan to invest in Biotech Workforce - what's the role of Cores?

    ABRF Members,

You may have seen today's White House announcement of a new action plan to invest in the biotechnology and biomedical workforce.

    https://lnkd.in/gtnAbSZW

The aims of this plan are well aligned with the activities planned in the upcoming ABRF NSF-funded consortium with community colleges to develop training courses for community college students to be prepared for careers in Core facilities.

After reviewing the new action plan, how else can Core facilities be engaged in this important initiative?  Would your Core or your institution benefit from an expanded workforce from community colleges?

    Share your thoughts and ideas....

    Hi Ken,

Dartmouth Cancer Center is always looking for ways to engage with the community, increase diversity at Dartmouth and create a workforce pipeline, particularly because hiring talent in our remote location can be challenging. Other programs are in place at Dartmouth to do this, but none are targeted toward the shared resources and lab skills training. Apologies if this has already been sent, but is there an information packet on the NSF proposal that I can share with our admins, and with whom should I connect them if we/they are interested in participating?

    Hi Ken,

Over the last 15 yrs or so, my core has been working with Hudson valley Community College and served as an internship site for their students. This federal initiative is certainly a very important one in terms of workforce development specifically in the biotech fields. I know that more initiatives in this area would be welcomed not just in our institution but also the industry partners in the region.

Like Fred, I too would like to share the aims of the ABRF ATE proposal with our admin. I am looking forward to see how we can partner on these objectives and contribute towards making this a great opportunity for the ABRF cores as well as the local community colleges.

    Regards

    Sridar

    Hello Sridar, Fred,

We are standing by for the official award announcement for the ABRF Careers in Cores grant, but we've received positive signals from NSF that this will be funded to begin in October.

Here's a link to the proposal for more details on the project's planned activities:
