  • 1.  NMR facility setup

    Posted 06-04-2024 09:46

I am in the process of getting a Solid state NMR installed and functioning as a shared resource for my university. I am hoping that folks who are currently managing an NMR core can provide suggestions and advice as I embark on this process. Would also appreciate any insights on billing templates, cryogen sources (liquid He is a challenge I understand)

    Dear Sridar,

We have 5 NMRs in my Core facility and a helium recovery system to recycle all helium boil off. I'd be happy to chat with you!

    Hi Sridar,

I was involved in a project to build space for NMR's and am happy to chat as well. He recovery is key for supply stability, cost certainty, sustainability, and grant competitiveness.

Billing is not so challenging. PI's usually want lower rates for long runs (I'm in favor since most staff time and wear on instrument is during start and end of experiments), for off hours use (I'm against), or both. Off hours use only helps core if daytime is oversubscribed.  You want staff around when users are setting up long experiments. Otherwise, you risk having to repeat poorly set up experiments.

    Happy to chat further.
