    Hello ABRF Community members,

Posting today from University of Vermont's Center for Biomedical Shared Resources. We're on an accelerated timeline to create a short policy and form that would formalize and clearly define the terms for instrument/equipment purchases by PIs to then be donated/housed in a core facility. It may cover the following:

Are similar instruments currently accessible on the campus?

What is the expected use for this equipment or instrument?

Who is the PI or responsible party that secured the equipment or instrument?

Where do you intend for the equipment or instrument to be housed? Did you discuss and solidify a plan for these accommodations with that shared core director including the availability of core staff for maintaining and training users on the instrument?

What special room/site considerations need to be assessed?  Drainage, hazardous chemical use, electrical, biohazard, compressed gas, water, vibration, or air circulation needs

What is the funding source, and what is the lifetime of that grant or funding? Has a business plan been formulated?

What department or funding source will be responsible for maintenance and service contract expenses for the lifetime of this instrument, who will be responsible for cost and arrangements for disposal at the end of its service?

Have you identified a list of potential current users for the instrument?

What special training or knowledge is required to operate this equipment at a high level of expertise?

Will this equipment remain here or leave with you, should you leave the university?

Thank you in advance! You can post to the forum board or email me directly with examples you have at amy.gilman@med.uvm.edu.  We look forward to reading and learning about your experience with this type of policy and any successful forms or prompting questions you use or have used.

    Regards,

    Amy
