  • 1.  Sanger sequencing provider recommendations

    Posted 07-18-2025 10:24

We recently stopped offering Sanger sequencing at our institution and set up a contract to outsource samples with Eurofins. Some of our investigators are not pleased with the data quality they are getting back.

So, I'm looking for recommendations for alternative providers of Sanger sequencing (commercial or academic). Ideally, these providers should offer robust success with a variety of templates (plasmids, amplicons, cosmids), strong customer support for troubleshooting, and reasonable prices. We are an academic institution, and our investigators would qualify for that type of discount. Please note, I am not attempting to renegotiate our existing contract with Eurofins but seeking alternative providers to pass on to investigators who are struggling with the new arrangement.

    Thanks,

    Geoff

We also had bad experiences with Eurofins and switched to Azenta (fka Genewiz).  Pricing for smaller projects was better, and we see more consistent turnaround and better data quality.  We do still have one lab that sends out to Eurofins independently because they get very good 96-well multiplate pricing, and just tolerate needing to reprep samples that fail, but most of our labs were pleased with the switch.

We have also used Azenta for many years and had a great experience with them.  They have been able to work with any sample type we have sent them.

    Hi Geoff,

The MSU Genomics Core offers Sanger sequencing!  We offer competitive prices, 2 business day turnaround time, and we are always able to help with troubleshooting.

Our pricing is given here: https://rtsf.natsci.msu.edu/genomics/pricing.aspx#sanger (off-campus academic researchers are charged a 3% administrative fee for processing payment, otherwise the price is the same for on- and off-campus researchers).

Sample requirements are given here: https://rtsf.natsci.msu.edu/genomics/sample-requirements/sanger-sequencing-sample-requirements.aspx

    Hi Geoff,

The CCIB DNA Core at Massachusetts General Hospital offers Sanger Sequencing. Please visit our website at https://dnacore.mgh.harvard.edu/

An overview of our Sanger service is here: MGH DNA Core Sanger Sequencing.

We also offer special rates for Academic institutions: MGH DNA Core Service Rates.

Our team is always happy to work with our customers on an individual basis to make sure that their specific sequencing needs are being met, including assistance in template and sample preparation, in the selection of the appropriate sequencing protocol, and in data interpretation and troubleshooting if needed.

We also provide support for custom sequencing projects if investigators are seeking sequencing that is not part of our routinely offered services.

If your team is interested in using the CCIB DNA Core services, please have them contact DNACORE@MGH.HARVARD.EDU for more information.

    All the best, Gina
