  • 1.  Core Business Benchmarking Questions

    December 3, 2022

    Hello Everyone,

An ABRF member asked us to post this message on their behalf, to try to collect benchmarking information for their Core:

    • what percentage of your Core's services are for external academic users?

    • what percentage of  your Core's services are for external commercial users?

To the extent that you may have this related information:

    • what percentage of your Institution's funding is from external academic (or government) sources?

    • what percentage of your Institution's funding is from external commercial sources?

Please share any information you can to help your ABRF colleagues.

    Thank you.

    Hi Ken,
How are we supposed to share this information? In a post to the group, or in a form? Would the person need to know where we are located and what type of core we run?

    Good morning!
Speaking on behalf of Umass Chan Medical School, we have 45+ facilities and only track this data for those facilities that have a heavy contingent of external customers.    One is our CryoEM Facility.   As of last quarter for that particular facility, our Usage (not revenue) was 33% internal, 8% outside academic and 59% Industry.   The revenue associated with that split was 11% internal, 8% academic and 81% industry.   Other facilities that are heavily externally used are our Stroke Research Center, the Vector Core Facility and a Humanized Mouse Facility.    Please reach out to me if you'd like more figures.   Have a great day!

    Susanna

    For the core business survey,
The UCSC Chemical Screening Center has 100% revenue from internal use for the past two years, although I'm always trying to recruit external customers and we had some many years ago. I can't speak for the university as a whole nor the ~dozen other cores. Thanks.
