  • 1.  Statement to PIs about the value of acknowledging cores, and using RRIDs

    Hello, 

    At OHSU, we are drafting a communication to PIs about the value of acknowledging cores and using RRIDs. I'm looking for wording to include in the communication that kind of hooks PIs in and succinctly explains the need to acknowledge and use RRIDs. For example, what does the PI get out of it? Why should the PI feel compelled to do this? I know we mention on our core marketplace page that it "makes it easier for your facility to get the credit you require to stay compliant with federal grants," but why should PIs care about this? 

    Suggestions are much appreciated!

    Hi Andy,

    At UNC Chapel Hill we've gone with the "increased acknowledgment of core facilities allows us to demonstrate to stakeholders the importance of continued financial investment in staff and equipment. This improves your turn around time and access to cutting edge technology/equipment within the facilities you already trust to aid in your research" tactic. Additionally, if core directors want to apply for instrumentation grants they need to demonstrate the cores' contributions to research and that only counts if there is an official acknowledgment of the core's name or the inclusion of the director as a co-author. Not properly acknowledging the core jeopardizes the chances of core directors to successfully fund high-end instrumentation--we had a core director who had applied for such a grant and then received feedback they needed to remove.a large number of papers they had included in the application because the authors did not acknowledge them correctly. When the department head found out he sent a strongly worded e-mail to the department faculty, so that may be a pitch as well. I don't know how successful this is--it's been targeted to a handful of cores' customers rather than widespread.
