  • 1.  Animal Imaging Facilities - instrument question

    Posted yesterday

    Hi All -

We are interested in purchasing a new rodent animal imaging instrument to replace an aging IVIS system.  I would appreciate learning if there are competitor systems to the IVIS or does it remain the "gold standard" for live animal imaging using bioluminescence or fluorescence detection.  I look forward to hearing from anyone who has such systems.

    thank  you,

    Julie

Hi Julie - at the University of Colorado, we have recently replaced our old IVIS200 with two Revivify IVIS Spectrum - and even added one IVIS Spectrum/CT. Mostly because yes, it is a superb system and our researchers have a solid expertise/ know the system and software well and feel comfortable. But there are also the Spectral Instruments (recently purchased by Bruker) - there optical scanners (Lago?) are great as well. I believe Fred Hutch has one or two of those

Thanks for the quick response, Natalie.  I'll check out both of your suggestions.  Do you know the maximum number of mice that can be imaged simultaneously in the Spectrum and Spectrum CT?

    Hi Julie,

I recently reached out to Scintica for information on their optical systems which look really nice.  We have 2 IVIS Luminas in our core, about 10 years old. I was specifically looking at the Newton 7.0, which looks great. And the price is competitive for what it can do. There is a nearby company that has one, which I need to go and check out in action, but ultimately I think it is a great option.

    Hope this helps,

    Sharon

Hi Sharon - I really appreciate the info on Scintica as a possible competitor to the IVIS system.  I will add it to my list to explore!
Thank you for the quick response!

    Hi Julie,

We replaced our old IVIS with a Spectral AMI several years ago, primarily because a faculty member had received an internal instrumentation grant and chose that instrument, which he placed in the core. But the faculty seem happy with it, and I haven't heard any complaints about it being inferior to the IVIS system.
