We put together an "education" rate for two of our cores that were frequently used for classes, because the classes consumed quite a bit of instrument time over the course of a semester. It was low (heavily subsidized), and done in consultation with the departments, who were covering the fees. -- ...

Hi Corey, In our metabolomics core, we don't carry contracts on any of our instruments. We also have 13 mass specs in the core, 9 of them from a single vendor. Our staff is extremely skilled, and can repair most problems themselves. They've developed a good relationship with their main vendor, and ...

We are a hybrid model, with some cores managed locally, and some managed centrally through the Office of Research. We are slowly moving toward a more centralized model, although I think we will always have some cores managed at the department or college level. Our centrally managed cores have administrative ...

Do any of your institutions have rules or guidelines about setting external for-profit rates? Our institution allows the cores to create a percentage mark-up for these rates (ie, beyond break-even), but we are required to take into account businesses in the state who are offering the same type of service, ...

We track research impact in a variety of ways. We track both number of grants and annual grant funds supported by the cores. We also track publications that acknowledge the core (the dreaded publication tracking!), as well as papers in which core staff are co-authors. Our institution also has a mechanism ...

We too have one pagers for each of our core facilities, for handing out at orientations, open houses, and at our annual new faculty reception. We keep them high level and focused on applications rather than instrumentation, so we don't have to update them so often. Each flyer also has a QR code which ...

Hi Colleen, Here is the wording we use when we invite faculty to sit on our advisory committees. The core director's input is critical in choosing whom to invite, because they work with the researchers directly, and have greater insight into who will be engaged and provide good support, and which faculty ...

We host a reception for new faculty each year, with food and drinks, and the cores presenting posters. That is usually very well attended and nearly always generates new users. Faculty are individually invited, and we have learned that specifically mentioning that food and wine will be available is critical ...

We don't have a formal program, but like Brian, we have been successful in using startup negotiations to place instruments in a core, and giving new faculty an account to use to pay for instrument use. This is a model we are trying to encourage across all the colleges here. For PIs writing equipment ...

Hi ABRFers, I'm the Associate Director of Operations at Purdue's Bindley Bioscience Center. I'm primarily a core administrator, and also involved in our statewide CTSA. I am a member of the ABRF Core Administrator's Network Coordinating Committee (CAN-CC). Question: what is the most successful program ...

For the most part, we define critical equipment as anything that is storing irreplaceable samples or specimens. In practice, that means -80 and LN2 freezers, and anything that involves live animals, where an animal could be injured if a power outage happened. We don't put most analytical equipment (ie ...
